Well, really this is not a trick question, but KHLGA stands for Kent House Leisure Gardens Association, and there are some plot holders who grow flowers, fruit bushes and trees, as well as, or instead of vegetables.

There are gardens laid out like parks, with ponds, flower areas, seating, clearly not the usual arrangement for allotments. At least one or two plots are traditional allotment sites - regimented vegetables marching in rows, lovely to see, and eat.

There are social events, such as Meet the Neighbours lunch, held on May Bank Holiday Monday (Spring), where gardeners come together to chat and get to know each other. Some plot holders who may have been on site for a decade or two meet up with newcomers, still finding out about couch grass and bindweed, and how to deal with it. Each brings a plate of something to share, and the Spring is officially welcomed in.

There are two "Open" days, Spring and late Summer, when the local community is invited to come and explore the gardens, and these events raise money for local charities,* as well as boosting the KHLGA funds, with live music, good home cooking, and seedlings or produce, according to the season. The September event hosts a "Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Show", where gardeners exhibit their prize blooms and pods, hoping to win the red sticker.

Midsummer and Halloween picnics, Harvest suppers and Christmas lunches, gardeners develop very healthy appetites.

The Bromley Allotments Competition is entered into in a spirit of friendly rivalry with plot holders all over the borough, culminating in a reception where cups and certificates are handed out, KHLGA has many such winners among its members.

Whilst KHLGA is among the more expensive sites in the Bromley Borough, it has a long waiting list ....

Gates are open on Sunday mornings to all, between 10.30 and 1.00 p.m.

Entrance is gained between 91 and 93 Kent House Road, SE26 - opposite Woodbastwick Road.

* Charities supported include St. Christopher's Hospice, Sydenham: Cancer Research UK, Sydenham Road: Maggie's Cancer Care Centre, Charing X Hospital, Hammersmith: NSPCC, Bromley: Parents & Toddlers Group, Camberwell.
